Baseball preview: 6A South Region

First Colonial and Ocean Lakes gave fans plenty of drama last week in the Coastal Conference tournament championship. Both clubs advance to the regional tournament with hopes of meeting again soon.

Matchups:

The Dolphins head into region play as confident as ever after beating No. 2 Kellam and No. 1 First Colonial in the conference tournament. Ocean Lakes will look to seniors Corey Hinds and Chase Counts for production from the mound and the plate. Grassfield has won four games in a row and will rely on ace Garrett Stallings, one of the area’s top hurlers.

Western Branch at First Colonial, 6 p.m. Monday

The Patriots enter as favorites for good reason. A deep pitching rotation led by Justin Cook and an efficient lineup guided by Tommy Green make this squad one of the area’s most dangerous and balanced groups. Western Branch and First Colonial are both coming off losses in their conference tournament finals. Expect a regrouped and motivated Patriots club; it hasn’t lost consecutive games all year.
