VIRGINIA BEACH — Ever wanted to learn how to garden oysters?
Now’s your chance.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is offering seminars this June. After learning how to care for oysters, volunteers will be able to raise some of the filter feeders off their own docks or marinas — “a low-maintenance and fun family activity,” the foundation said in a release.
When the oysters are a year old, the foundation will relocate them to a nearby sanctuary reef, helping oyster restoration efforts across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The seminars teach oyster growing basics and provide the tools and baby oysters necessary to start. On the same day, the foundation will hold “round-ups” where returning gardeners can swap out their full-grown oysters for baby ones, the release said.
The seminars are:
- 6 a.m. June 7 at the Norfolk Yacht & Country Clu
- 9 a.m. June 25 at the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach
Registration is required. The foundation suggests a $30 donation, which includes a CFB membership, to offset the cost of the program.
Participants can register at cbf.org/vaoystergardening, by calling 757-632-3804, or by emailing [email protected].
