Bishop Sullivan names new varsity, JV boys basketball coaches

Bishop Sullivan Catholic has named Ricky Barbosa its new head coach of the boys varsity basketball team, the school announced.

Barbosa replaces Chris Harris, who led the Crusaders to the VISAA Division 1 state tournament this past season. Harris, who had been the coach for eight seasons, stepped down last month. He said by text today that he did so after meeting in late March with Athletic Director Richard Hine.

“We discovered that we have very different philosophies on important issues. A week later we officially parted ways,” Harris wrote. “I had already made plans for my departure with my assistants before the season had ended. It was an awesome experience building that program over the last 8 years and taking it from obscurity to being one of the most powerful programs in Hampton Roads.”

Hine said by email Wednesday that Harris’ departure “was mutual.”

“He had a great run here at BSCHS and we are appreciative of all he has done for the program over his 8 years,” Hine wrote.

Barbosa coached the Crusaders’ junior varsity boys team the past four seasons and compiled a 70-17 record.

The school also announced the hiring of Stefan Welsh as the new JV head coach and varsity assistant.

“Both coaches specialize in player development and maximizing the potential and performance of each young player they coach,” the school said in a release. “Bishop Sullivan is proud and excited to put the future of its basketball program in such capable hands.”
