Virginia Beach among most frugal U.S. cities, boardwalk nominated for nation’s best: The Business Notebook

Coupons.com ranked Virginia Beach among the 10 most frugal cities in the U.S., according to its 2015 savings index. Virginia Beach residents used 6.1 million coupons from Coupons.com in 2015 and saved a collective $7.9 million, landing the city in the No. 10 spot of most frugal U.S. cities.

Orlando, Fla., was the most frugal, clipping 11.6 million coupons and saving close to $18 million. Washington. D.C, snagged No. 2, using 29 million coupons and saving almost $40 million. The ranking considers overall savings and population.

The Virginia Beach boardwalk was nominated by readers of USA Today for best boardwalk in the U.S. The city attraction is up against 19 other boardwalks, including those in Hollywood Beach, Calif., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Chicago’s Navy Pier. Residents can vote for the Readers’ Choice 2016 award until noon May 23.

STIHL Inc. announced Stephen Ballenger is its new vice president of operations in the U.S. Ballenger will oversee production operations at the corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach. His role will include directing manufacturing, engineering and more. Ballenger has more than 30 years of engineering and manufacturing experience; he most recently served as president of Light Vehicles USA for Metalsa in Elizabethtown, Ky.

DSW opened a second location in Virginia Beach last week at 4588 Virginia Beach Blvd. The new 16,000-square-foot space in Pembroke Mall offers more than 21,000 pairs of men’s and women’s shoes. The selection includes sneakers, running shoes, boots, high heels, oxford, sandals, slip-ons and more. The first DSW location is at Lynnhaven Shopping Center, 2701 North Mall Drive.

JES Foundation Repair of Virginia Beach announced the addition of Matt Malone and private equity firm, Succession Capital Partners, as  new partners in the engineering firm.
Malone will be CEO of JES and oversee day-to-day operations of the company. Jesse Waltz, the co-founder of JES with his wife, Stella, will continue as the company’s president, chief consultant and member of the newly formed board of directors.
