Softball High Five: Kempsville, Ocean Lakes steady at the top

Welcome to Southside Daily’s inaugural rankings of the best high school softball teams in Virginia Beach. Sports reporter Joe Saade will list his top five each week based on his coverage of the local prep scene.

Kempsville added another quality win against a worthy Coastal Conference club on Monday, giving the Chiefs a 3-0 record against three of the four other teams in our top five. The Chiefs are not scheduled to play Ocean Lakes.

Ocean Lakes didn’t go down easy for its first loss of the season, forcing extra innings and even taking a lead before Kellam’s walk-off show on Friday. The Dolphins are riding high behind fine performances on the mound from Michelle Lehan and a power-hitting offense led by Jessica Goldyn and Maddy Glaubke.

First Colonial’s bats are starting to wake up. The Patriots have scored 33 runs during their four-game winning streak after generating just 14 runs in their previous four games (1-3).

Kellam has won three of its last four games, none more dramatic than Friday’s walk-off victory against then-undefeated Ocean Lakes.

Bayside has dropped four games in a row (including to Ocean Lakes and Kempsville) after starting 3-0 but still owns a quality win over First Colonial.

Records as of Saturday, April 16:

  1. Kempsville (7-3)
  2. Ocean Lakes (7-1)
  3. First Colonial (5-3)
  4. Kellam (4-3)
  5. Bayside (3-4)

On the bubble: Tallwood (4-3)
