American Cornhole Organization drawing the pros to Virginia Beach with tourney this weekend

Professional cornhole players will take their bag-slinging talents to Virginia Beach this weekend.

The American Cornhole Organization will host its 10th major tournament of the season Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Beach Field House on 2020 Landstown Centre Way. The World Championships will be held in July in Knoxville, Tenn.

The event will feature members from all ACO regions around the country competing in World Singles and Doubles, and seniors’, women’s and juniors’ singles division tournaments. Players must be ACO members to participate in the division tournaments and can purchase memberships the day of the event. Memberships are not required for the Slyder Cup double-elimination tournament, which starts at 1 p.m. Friday.

Debbie Lowrence, an eight-year Virginia Beach ACO representative who organizes Beach Cornhole leagues and tournaments, said Thursday there were more than 300 players nationwide signed up.

“People love to come here at this time of the year,” Lowrence said of the event. “The (cornhole) community really loves it. We get to have people from out-of-state experience the beach, stay at the hotels and enjoy the restaurants.”

Lowrence expects around 50 players from Virginia Beach and 100 total from all Hampton Roads to compete this weekend.

Virginia Beach resident Jordan Camba is the sixth-ranked player in Virginia, according to ACO’s World Single Rankings. Chesapeake’s Allen “Rocky” Rockwell, also a local ACO rep, is the second-ranked singles player.
