The Virginia Symphony Orchestra will play a concert at 8 p.m. Thursday at Phi Beta Kappa Hall at the College of William & Mary.
The show, conducted by JoAnn Falletta, features selections from Bach, Brahams and Mozart along with a quartet of four musicians who will play Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante.
The concertante blends chamber and symphony music in a format that allows each of the four musicians to have time in the spotlight.
The four musicians are violinist Vahn Armstrong, cellist Michael Daniels, oboist Sherie Lake Aguirre and bassoonist Laure Leisring. Falletta, whom the New York Times has called “one of the finest conductors of her generation,” is the Music Director for VSO.
“They have instinctive and well-honed musical communication,” Falletta said of the quartet in a news release. “Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante gives them an opportunity to display their gifts as soloists as well as principals.”
Other selections from the concert include Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 and Mozart’s Symphony No. 35. The Virginia Symphony Chorus will perform Brahms’ Shicksaslied, known as the “Song of Fate.”
VSO was founded in 1920, serving more than 160,000 people throughout Hampton Roads and North Carolina each year. Its lifelong learners and education and community programs reach 45,000 children per year.

Final Cabin Fever Concert Series Scheduled for Thursday in Yorktown
Kim Person and Lana Puckett will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Freight Shed in Yorktown as part of the Cabin Fever Concert Series.
The show was supposed to have been played March 5, but inclement weather prompted York County officials to delay the concert. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seating is first come, first served.
A county news release describes the singer-songwriters as “polished musicians” who are “warm and entertaining.” During their extensive touring, they have played alongside Janis Ian, Pam Rose, Chuck Pyle, the Kingston Trio and Patty Larkin.
The concert will consist of original songs from the duo paired with “tasteful selections” that include contemporary music and traditional country and folk.
The Cabin Fever Concert Series is an annual slate of concerts played at the Freight Shed along the shores of the York River. The concerts feature local musicians who play their music in an informal and friendly setting.
No advance tickets or reservations are offered. The free concert is sponsored by York County and Carrot Tree Kitchens.
