Four members from one of Virginia’s oldest Boy Scout troops received the organization’s highest honor.
Troop 103 Boy Scouts Chris Cordasco, Will Friedrichs, Dalton Mitchell and Chris Monahan were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during two ceremonies at Williamsburg united Methodist Church on Jan. 5 and the Kingsmill Recreation Center on Jan. 17.
To reach the level of Eagle Scout, the four had to earn 13 special merit badges, and 21 in total. The Scouts also had to hold leadership positions in the troop, attain all Boy Scout ranks, volunteer in the community, participate in scouting events and demonstrate the scouting ideals of service and leadership.
Eagle Scouts must also complete a community service project to attain the rank.
Cordasco, a senior at Jamestown High School, constructed four benches, including three replacements and one new, along the James City Mid-County Park walking trail.
Friedrichs, a junior at Jamestown High, renovated the trail and mile markers along hiking trails near the Powhatan Secondary neighborhood.
Mitchell, a 2014 graduate of Bruton High School, transformed an unused room at Heritage Humane Society into a pet food pantry.
Monahan, a sophomore at Jamestown High, coordinated a group of Scouts in the demolition and replacement of three walking trail bridges on the Powhatan Secondary walking trail.
The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest level of achievement in the scouting community. Since the organization’s founding in 1910, about 5 percent of Scouts have received the distinction.
Troop 103 has operated continuously in the Williamsburg area since it was chartered in 1924.
