York County is looking for help to find outstanding students needing scholarship money for college.
The county is currently accepting nominees for its Outstanding Youth Award Scholarships. The four $500 scholarships are sponsored by the county Board of Supervisors and the Youth Commission.
Anyone can nominate deserving students in one of four categories: community service, compassion, courage and overall achievement. Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. Feb. 26.
Nominated students must be residents of York County and currently enrolled in grades nine through 12 in public or private schools. Homeschooled students are also welcome to apply.
A selection committee will review the nomination and pick one winner for each category. All nominees will received a letter from the Board of Supervisors and a signed certificate congratulating them on their nomination.
The county is also accepting applications for the York County Youth Commission for the 2015-2016 school year. Applicants for the 15-member panel must reside in the county and be enrolled in grades eight through 11.
Members of the Youth Commission advocate for issues affecting young people in York County, and act as a link between the Board of Supervisors and the county’s youth.
To be considered for the commission, interested students must complete an application form and essay, as well as submit a letter of recommendation. Up to three students from each of the county’s five voting districts will be appointed to the Youth Commission.
Applications must be submitted by March 18. Selected students will be introduced at the Board of Supervisors meeting in June.

Hard copies of the necessary forms for scholarships and the Youth Commission are available at the Yorktown and Tabb libraries, Williamsburg-James City County libraries and the Parks, Recreation and Tourism office at 100 County Drive.
