W.Y.D2Knock out your holiday shopping before Thanksgiving at the many craft shows happening this weekend. You can also take in live performances for children or adults.

Theater and Film

This weekend, the College of William & Mary’s theater department will present “The Threepenny Opera.” The show is an adaptation of the Bertolt Brecht musical satire, “The Beggar’s Opera,” set to jazz tunes. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phi Beta Kappa Hall.

Bruton High School’s fall play is “Murder Most Foul,” with shows at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The murder mystery, for ages 13 and older, centers on a rich couple and a diamond necklace that may be cursed.

Cheaper by the Dozen” is Walsingham Academy’s fall play. With performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the comedy tells the story of a family with 12 children.

Toyland” comes to the Williamsburg Players Playhouse on Saturday morning. Rainbow Puppet Production’s musical features the voice of Mickey Rooney. The show starts at 11 a.m.

The Williamsburg Players finishes up the run of its fall play, “The Mousetrap” by Agatha Christie, this weekend. Performances of the murder mystery are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. at the group’s theater.

William & Mary’s Global Film Festival will host its fall launch event Friday. This year’s theme is “Film and Renewal,” and the event will feature a screening of the comedy “Land Ho!” about two ex-brothers-in-law who go on an Icelandic road trip together. A reception starts at 6 p.m. at the Kimball Theatre followed by the film at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for students.

Craft Shows

The Annual Edgehill Holiday Craft Show comes to Yorktown this weekend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. It includes a variety of crafters and vendors, a silent auction, hot food and baked goods at the Edgehill Clubhouse.

Colonial Williamsburg employees, volunteers and retirees will sell handmade items at the Colonial Williamsburg Employee Arts and Crafts Show. Among the wares will be jams and jewelry. The show goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Historic Triangle Community Services Building.

Queens Lake Middle School is hosting its eighth annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Bazaar. There will be more than 60 local artists and vendors, live music and food. It goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Live Music

Absolute Acoustic will perform Thursday evening at Oceans and Ale. The progressive acoustic rock starts at 6 p.m.

Scotland’s Battlefield Band, which plays tradition Scottish music, is giving a concert Friday. The band was founded in 1969 and tours the world, and will play in Williamsburg at 7: 30 p.m.

A benefit concert Saturday at King of Glory Lutheran Church will support Grove Christian Outreach Center and Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels. Joint choirs from King of Glory and Wellspring United Methodist Church will perform a choral program starting at 7 p.m., with a reception afterward.

Guitarist Louis Vangieri will perform at 1 p.m. Sunday at the William & Mary Bookstore. He will play a mix of acoustic covers and original songs.

Tribe Athletics

Tribe Men’s Basketball takes on Bluefield on Thursday night. The game starts at 7 p.m. at William & Mary Hall.

On Saturday, the football team will play conference rival University of Richmond. Cheer for the Tribe at 7:30 p.m. at Zable Stadium.

Learn Something New

Thursday at the James City County Recreation Center, attend a talk by Steve Carroll, director of public programs at the State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm. Starting at 6:45 p.m. he will discuss the role of plants in committing and solving crimes.

Institute for Dance will give a three-day program, starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday on acrobatic yoga. The class for partner acrobatics will look at a blend of yoga, gymnastics and various styles of dance.
