Smokey Bear will celebrate his 70th birthday while James City County celebrates a cleaner setting at a Litter and Recycling Expo on Friday.
Sponsored by the James City Clean County Commission, the free event will showcase the group’s projects in the community, as well as the businesses and other organizations working to prevent littering and promote recycling.
“This is a pretty dull subject, but it’s an important subject,” said Kensett Teller, a volunteer appointed to the commission.
There will also be demonstrations, games and activities for children and adults alike, from noon to 7 p.m. at Legacy Hall in New Town.
The expo starts with a ribbon-cutting and presentation on local government initiatives. Business community spotlights will start at 2 p.m., followed by school recycling spotlights at 4 p.m., and neighborhood and community group spotlights at 6 p.m.
In addition to Smokey Bear, who will receive his birthday cake during the afternoon, Busch Gardens will be bringing some of the park’s animals for kid-friendly programs from 3 to 6 p.m.

The James City Clean County Commission was started in 1979 as a group of volunteers appointed by the Board of Supervisors, tasked with promoting recycling, controlling litter, providing environmental education and helping to coordinate county beautification efforts. Learn more here.
