For 12 hours overnight in the spring, residents will loop a track to fight a disease that never sleeps.
But Relay for Life, a national event in support of the American Cancer Society, is more than just one night’s effort.
The local chapter is preparing for the 15th annual Relay for Life of Williamsburg with a kickoff event Tuesday. Starting at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Williamsburg-James City County Schools Central Office at James Blair, anyone interested in getting involved is encouraged to attend to learn more.
This year’s Relay for Life will start at 7 p.m. May 1 at Jamestown High School.
At the kickoff, organizers will announce this year’s theme, along with other new activities and team incentives. There will also be food, drinks, live music and prizes.
It also marks the start of fundraising for the year, which will happen in the months leading up to Relay for Life through golf tournaments, yard sales, dinners and music events.
The local Relay for Life came under new leadership last year, with Sue Harmon taking over as event chairwoman and looking to revitalize the traditional programs. She added an activity space for children, area vendors in a food court, partnership with Beyond Boobs! and expanded Reflection Tent.
Harmon will once again chair the event this year, along with Christine Tirone.
The volunteer committee that contributes to the planning is still looking for members, including a volunteer coordinator and entertainment chair.
