Last week local Bank of America employees wheeled away from their desks and rolled up their shirt sleeves to help build a house.

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula & Greater Williamsburg, about 20 volunteers renovated the home of area resident Angelia Robinson and her teenage son. Their efforts were a piece of a weeklong global build initiative being held by Bank of America in 36 communities around the world.

Employees also worked at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores, where the organization sells donated furniture, housewares and materials at a discount to fund building projects. Bank of America volunteers priced, cleaned and organized donated supplies.

“Home ownership is a critical part of financial security and a cornerstone of thriving neighborhoods, but it is still hard to achieve for many residents of Hampton Roads, particularly low- and moderate-income families,” said Charlie Henderson, Bank of America’s Hampton Roads market president, in a news release.

The build was also part of a larger company investment in revitalizing communities and helping families stay in their homes while moving toward financial stability. Bank of America awarded $95,000 total in grants to Hampton Roads nonprofits, including Habitat for Humanity Peninsula & Greater Williamsburg.

“These renovation projects as well as our wider investments are just a part of our ongoing commitment to make Hampton Roads a stronger and more vibrant community,” Henderson said in the release.
