W.Y.D2It’s Labor Day weekend, which for many means the end of summer and the start of the school year. Hold onto the spirit of vacation by enjoying a concert in Merchants Square or, if you’re feeling brave, taking the stage yourself.

Stories and Songs

On Saturday, area native Dylan Pritchett and other members of the Virginia Black Storytellers will share tales of freedom at Freedom Park. There will also be crafts for children, music and food. The stories start at noon and all ages are welcome.

In the latest show of the James City County Rotary Club’s concert series, a high-energy acoustic group will perform Saturday at the Kimball Theatre. The Whiskey Rebellion, from Richmond, will start playing at 7:30 p.m. Read more about who the concert series benefits in the Hometown section.

Take the Mic

If you have a flair for comedy, the Serious Improv Kompany will hold auditions Thursday night. Try-outs start at 7 p.m. at the Williamsburg Regional Library in Toano. Read more about the troupe and its fast-paced performances here.

James City County Parks and Recreation will present an evening of Karaoke in the Park on Saturday. The music starts at 7 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park.

Playing and Cheering

William & Mary’s men’s soccer team opens its season on Friday night. The Tribe will take on East Tennessee State, starting at 7 p.m. at Martin Family Stadium. Children ages 2 to 12 wearing recreational soccer jerseys get in for free.

The Williamsburg Volleyball Club is holding try-outs this weekend, starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Walsingham Academy. The club has spots for boys and girls ages 10 to 18.
