Outdoor Fun
Child Development Resources is holding its annual August race on Saturday with a superhero theme this year. Registration for the 5k and 1-mile fun run starts at 7 a.m. at the Vineyards of Williamsburg. Read more about this year’s theme in the Hometown section.
James City County Parks and Recreation is hosting a Family Splash Party on Saturday evening at Upper County Park in Toano. The free event includes swimming, music, games and prizes, starting at 7 p.m.
Literary Learning
Alison Fortier will sign copies of her book, “A History Lover’s Guide to Washington, D.C.: Designed For Democracy,” at 10 a.m. Saturday at the William & Mary Bookstore. Fortier is a William & Mary alumna who spent more than 30 years living and working in the D.C. area.
Jane Austen’s 4-H Club: Hats, Hair, Hosiery & Hankies, a lecture about attire in the author’s time, starts at 2 p.m. Sunday. Held in the Schell Room of the Williamsburg Regional Library, the talk will feature Bonnie Fairbank and Virginia Lee on suitable, Austen-appropriate costumes.
Music
The Watermen’s Museum in Yorktown will host a Chesapeake Bay Music Jamboree on Friday evening. From 6 to 8 p.m., there will be live bluegrass and folk music by the Shanty Grass band. Tickets support the museum’s ongoing special education programs.
Local guitarist Louis Vangieri will share his music with guests Sunday afternoon at the William & Mary Bookstore. Starting at 1 p.m., he will perform a mix of acoustic covers and original works.
