Hear the few, the proud and the musicians this summer, when the Military Band Concert Series comes to Riverwalk Landing in August.

For three shows overlooking the river in historic Yorktown, York County is partnering with the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band, the U.S. Fleet Forces Band, and the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band.

All concerts are presented free to the public, and will start at 6:30 p.m.

The series kicks off Aug. 6, marking the 96th anniversary of the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. To celebrate, the U.S. Fleet Forces Band from Norfolk — the largest of the Navy’s 11 fleet bands whose regular gigs are on ships, military bases and for foreign dignitaries — will play for a local crowd.

The following week, the high-energy Full Spectrum will feature its horn section in a wide range of musical genres. The Aug. 12 show includes pop, funk, R&B, hip hop, Latin and classic rock.

series posterJazz will fill the Riverwalk on Aug. 19, when the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Jazz Combo plays a mix of classic jazz, ballads, blues, soul and contemporary pieces.

The series concludes Aug. 26 with The Blue Aces, a band that performs annually for thousands of military members and civilians. With experience playing in venues from small dinners to large festivals, The Blue Aces performs a variety of American popular music styles.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating, and free parking is available at the Riverwalk Landing parking terrace, York Hall, York-Poquoson Courthouse and the County Administration Building, as well as at other public parking lots throughout town.
