Arts
“A Lucky Night in the Orient” celebrates the fourth anniversary of New Town Art Gallery while raising money for the family of a young boy with leukemia. Admission to the event, which starts at 5p.m. Friday, is free but there will be raffles for prizes including original art. Read more about the history of the gallery in the Hometown section.
Attend a Persian dance workshop Saturday afternoon, which will focus on various folk styles of dance and music from Iran. The three-hour workshop will be an introduction to Persian dance, and starts at 12:30 p.m. at Garden of Zen Yoga.
Expos, Fairs and Markets
Meet area employers interested in hiring workers ages 50 and older at the fifth annual Senior Employment Event. The job fair, sponsored by the Senior Services Coalition, starts at noon Thursday at the Historic Triangle Community Services Center.
The annual Greek Festival returns to the Williamsburg Hellenic Center this weekend, with authentic food, music and dancing. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free, but there will also be vendors selling crafts, jewelry and home goods.
The Community Cares Expo on Friday will feature speakers and vendors focused on health for mind and body. The expo is free, and starts at 2 p.m. at C&F Bank at 4780 Longhill Road.
Shop for yard sale treasure while staying out of the sun at an indoor flea market at the Historic Triangle Community Services building Saturday morning. There will be antiques, crafts, jewelry and collectibles for shoppers, starting at 7 a.m.
Outdoor Activities
York River State Park is hosting a number of activities as part of the Great American Backyard Campout weekend. While there is no overnight camping at the site, the park offers hikes, fishing and stargazing on Saturday.
The Williamsburg Area Amateur Radio Club is holding its annual Field Day event this weekend, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League. Starting at 2 p.m. Saturday at Little Creek Reservoir Park and running for 24 hours, the field day intends to show how amateur radio might be used for emergency communications if other methods were unreliable.
Sing under the stars with Saturday’s Karaoke in the Park at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Sponsored by James City County Parks and Recreation, the free event starts at 7 p.m.
This and That
The Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a memorial service Thursday morning to honor those who died in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary on June 26, 1781. The wreath-laying event starts at 10 a.m. at Freedom Park and is open to the public.
The Williamsburg Winery is hosting an inaugural summer solstice celebration and seafood festival from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Also a release party for the 2013 A Midsummer Night’s Wine, the event offers guests a wine tasting glass, two glasses of wine and samplings of eight small seafood plates.
The Virginia German Shepherd Rescue will be holding an Adoption Day event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Nautical Dog. Representatives from the nonprofit organization will have pictures of all its available dogs, from puppies to seniors, and will also be accepting donations.
