Hometown: JCC Employee Named Communications Center Director of the Year

A local communications center director was recognized as the best of the year, while a senior earned some money for college through her community service efforts. The College of William & Mary has a new vice president for strategic initiatives with a lengthy commitment to the school. James City County honored students who used art to celebrate fair housing. A Mid-Atlantic Commercial broker earned a title for a successful year of transactions.

A James City County employee has received a statewide award for her work in emergency communications.

Julie McKercher, who has served as director of James City County’s Emergency Communications Division since 2006, was selected as the Communications Center Director of the Year for 2013 by the Virginia Chapter of the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials.

The award was presented May 15 at the APCO Spring Conference in Virginia Beach.

To earn the honor, McKercher had to demonstrate the highest level of commitment to the communications center’s staff and their professional career development, as well as exemplify leadership, integrity and vision. She was also chosen based on her positive attitude, listening skills and willingness to learn new technologies.

Emergency Communications in the county provides 24-hour coverage for emergency calls to police, fire and EMS. The Division also takes emergency calls for Animal Control and the James City Service Authority after normal business hours.

W&M Dean of Admissions Named New VP of Strategic Initiatives

The longtime dean of admissions at the College of William & Mary will be stepping into a new role this August.

Henry Broaddus is slated to succeed Jim Golden as vice president for strategic initiatives for the school. In that role, he will report directly to President Taylor Reveley, and oversee the division that includes the offices of university relations and creative services, economic development and business innovation and government relations.

He will also supervise the university’s director of sustainability and be manage special projects dealing with strategic planning, operational efficiency and financial sustainability.

Broaddus, a Richmond native, came to William & Mary in 2001 and has since gained rank and responsibility in the admission and financial aid offices.

“It remains unclear which will be harder — leaving that team or following Jim Golden, but I am excited nonetheless about the challenges of this new role,” Broaddus said in a news release. “I look forward to working with the talented people in the Office of Strategic Initiatives and to working more closely with President Reveley to ensure a future for William & Mary that befits this great university.”

Golden, who came to the position in 2008, will stay involved with the college in a a volunteer capacity, as senior counselor to the president.

WCA Senior Awarded Community Service Scholarship

Kelly McGregor, a member of the Williamsburg Christian Academy Class of 2014, was awarded the Junior Woman’s Club Nan Cruikshank Scholarship.

McGregor has organized at least eight food and clothing drives to benefit FISH and the Williamsburg community over the years.

JCC Housing Office marks Fair Housing Month with Children’s Art Contest

To mark the anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act and Fair Housing Month, James City County’s Office of Housing and Community Development and the Parks and Recreation Division held a contest for children in the after-school program.

They asked young artists to create a picture of their dream home.

Sarah Stephens won first prize, with Jasmine Price in second and Makayla Sturdivant in third. The three were recognized at the May 13 Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Fair Housing Act, intended to supplement the Civil Rights Act, was signed into law April 11, 1968. It prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and family status to all its citizens.

Monty Spencer Named a 2013 CoStar Power Broker

The Senior Vice President of Mid-Atlantic Commercial has been named a 2013 CoStar Power Broker by CoStar Group, Inc., an Internet provider of information, analytics and marketplaces in commercial real estate.

mid atlanticMonty Spencer qualified for the annual industry award, as one of the top commercial brokers in Hampton Roads based on the total transactions he closed in 2013. His overall transaction volumes were evaluated against other commercial real estate brokers active in the region by CoStar Group, and ranked among the top brokers in the market.
