Hometown: Historic Garden Week Comes to Historic Triangle

garden weekSee the area spring into bloom when Historic Garden Week comes to town.

The program offers home and garden tours to more than 250 locations statewide from Saturday through May 3. It provides the opportunity for visitors to see gardens at the peak of Virginia’s springtime color and houses decorated with more than 2,000 flower arrangements created by Garden Club of Virginia members.

The affair dates back to 1927, when a flower show organized by the Garden Club of Virginia raised $7,000 to save trees planted by Thomas Jefferson on the lawn at Monticello.

There are local tours available this year in Williamsburg and Yorktown.

Williamsburg

This tour is the 81st year the show comes to Williamsburg, and is hosted by the Williamsburg Garden Club from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It features homes and gardens on College Creek and in Colonial Williamsburg, as well as a small history lesson for 18th-century shipping and commerce. Other points of interest include Mattey’s Garden at Matthew Whaley School and the Williamsburg Winery.

Parking is available at the winery, with shuttle service to homes on Conservancy Road. Colonial Williamsburg shuttles in historic area are available to HGW ticket holders, and bus tours are welcome.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the event. Advance tickets available through 4 p.m. Saturday, paid in cash or check only, at G. Bates Studio, Seasons of Williamsburg and Wild Birds Unlimited. Click here to purchase online.
