Hometown: Hike for Hospice on Saturday Supports End of Life Care

hike for hospiceTake a hike for a cause this weekend at Park East in Governor’s Land.

The second annual Hike for Hospice will take place Saturday afternoon. The event benefits Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, a nonmedical and not-for-profit organization that seeks to enhance the quality of life for those facing the last phases and to support their loved ones.

Hospice House relies on support from the community to function, and 90 percent of its budget is funded by gifts from individuals groups and businesses.

The organization has already met its $70,000 fundraising goal for the event, but there is still room for more participants or donations.

Registration at the event starts at 12:15 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $35 per person and the first 300 to register will receive race merchandise at the event. Registration is free for children ages 10 and under.

Walkers can join as an individual or form or join a team.

There will be prizes awarded for the team that has the most money raised by Tuesday. There will also be prizes awarded to the team with the largest number of walkers — the Golden Shoe Award — and the Best Dream Team Award for most interesting theme or costumes.

Any teams raising $500 or more will earn a trail sign in honor of a loved one along the route.

Opening remarks will be made at 1:45 p.m., followed by the leisurely 2-mile walk. There will be a Celebration of Life starting at 2:30 p.m., DJ’d by Bobby Hornsby, with dancing, food and drinks.

A silent auction will run from the start of registration until 4 p.m.

Those who wish to contribute but cannot participate in person have the option of making a donation online. Click here to support a specific hiker at the event.
