York County high school students can apply for a number of scholarships from an area philanthropic organization.
The awards are from the Peninsula Community Foundation, a growing project that joins other foundations, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and government officials to address the needs of the community and work to build creative solutions. In 10 years, they have given more than $10 million to assist the community.

The Peninsula Scholarship Fund was established with the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia in 2012 with a gift from Carolyn Pendeleton Lackey. The fund provides annual scholarships to peninsula students — including Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County — who need financial aid for continued education at a four-year institution.
Lackey was a lifelong resident of the area, and strong supporter of local charities.
Applications are due Thursday.
Thomas W. Doggins Memorial Scholarship
This award is for Tabb High School students, named in memory of a former Tabb teacher.
Doggins taught biology and served as chairman of the science department from 1972 — when Tabb High School opened — until his retirement in 2002. He was also a strong advocate for athletics, assisting with track meets and attending many sports games.
Applications are due May 14.
Arthur Lee Galloway, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
1st Lt. Arthur Lee Galloway, Jr., U.S. Army, was killed in Vietnam in 1971. He was known as a natural leader, athlete, avid reader and good friend. He was a 1965 graduate of York High School, and went on to attend Virginia Military Institute.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a York High School graduating senior who exemplifies Lee’s traits of patriotism, sportsmanship, sense of humor, and a love of reading and journalism. It has been endowed by Galloway’s friends and family.
Applications are due May 15.
Joseph H. Levi Memorial Scholarship
This award is open to senior athletes from Tabb High School.
It honors Levi, a Tabb teacher and coach, who died of cancer shortly after retiring in 2010. Levi worked at Tabb for 23 years, using jokes and puns to teach government and history.
Applications are due April 23.
Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship
Sager taught students at Tabb Elementary School for 18 years, where she helped to create a mentorship program for prospective teachers to volunteer in the local schools. During a long battle with cancer, Sager continued to teach and was a proud part of the school’s Relay for Life team and participated in numerous Relay events at Tabb High School.
The scholarship was established by her husband and three daughters to honor her passion for educating children. It is open to a Tabb High School student who plans to pursue a career in education.
Applications are due April 30.
Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
In honor of the former principal of Tabb High School, seniors from Bruton High School, Grafton High School, Tabb High School, York High School and York River Academy are eligible for this award. It will provide assistance to a student pursuing a career in health and technology, who faces financial hardship in achieving secondary education.
Tylavsky retired from the York County School Division after 26 years of service.
Applications are due Wednesday.
