What You’ll Do: April 10-13

W.Y.D2Celebrate — or mourn — the end of spring break this weekend, with lots of activities for tiny ones and teenagers. For those without children in tow, there are chances to catch a football game, watch chefs spar or see a program of Middle Eastern dance.

Festivals and Family Events

Artfully Yours, an art consignment store and workshop, will host a grand opening event Saturday at its Richmond Road location. There will be a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., followed by free crafts for children, face painting, a blacksmith display, samples of locally made granola bars and more.

There will be an Easter egg hunt Saturday morning, presented by Jamestown Presbyterian Church. Activities and photo opportunities with the famous bunny start at 10:30 a.m.at Williamsburg National Golf Course for children ages 2 to 10. The egg quest begins at 11 a.m. The event is free, but there will be a collection of food items for FISH.

Here local bands perform while supporting breast cancer research, at the annual TribeFest for the Cure on Saturday. The music festival benefits the Tidewater affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and will have food, children’s activities and a wine raffle starting at 2 p.m. in the courtyard of Miller Hall on William & Mary’s campus. Teenagers can take over the R. F. Wilkinson YMCA on Saturday evening, with an event open to all community teens in sixth through 12th grade. Starting at 7 p.m., there will be supervised swimming, basketball, gym access, games and relaxing, with snacks and drinks available for purchase.

Learn Something New

The Yorktown Victory Center will host a lecture Thursday evening titled “‘The Tyranny of the People’: A Loyalist Perspective on the American Revolution.” Starting at 7 p.m. Holger Hoock, the J. Carroll Amundson Professor of British History at the University of Pittsburgh will consider the fate of Loyalists during the war. Admission is free, but advance reservations are recommended.

A program designed to help the unemployed and underemployed start their own businesses will hold an introduction session 10 a.m. Friday. The event will be held at the York-Poquoson Social Services Office. Read more about the Launch Hampton Roads program here.

The latest in Iron-Bound Gym’s lecture series, IBG University, will feature two doctors from TPMG Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. They will discuss shoulder and foot pain and injuries, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the gym. The program is free and open to the public.

In the Spotlight, at the Mic

Rough Crossing” concludes this weekend by the Williamsburg Players at their playhouse on Hubbard Lane. The show is set on board a trans-Atlantic voyage in the 1930s and tells the story of two playwrights struggling to finish their new music. Shows are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The latest production by Opera in Williamsburg will be “Don Pasquale” and shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Kimball Theatre. The fully staged comedy features an international cast performing in Italian, with English supertitles. Learn more about Opera in Williamsburg and its owner here.

Janna’s Int’l Dance Studio and the William & Mary Beledi Club will team up for an afternoon of Middle Eastern dance, both traditional and modern, as well as the dances of the Hawaiian Islands. Spring Halfa 2014 is free and open to the public, and starts at 5 p.m. Sunday at Commonwealth Auditorium in William & Mary’s Sadler Center.

The Morning Dust Rises Tour presents Aaron Shust on Sunday at the Williamsburg Community Chapel. Shust will be joined in concert by national recording artists MIKESCHAIR, Jonny Diaz and Lauren Daigle to for a night of music and ministry. The event starts at 7 p.m.

Tribe Athletics

Get a rare treat of Tribe football in the springtime. The annual Green and Gold game will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zable Stadium.

William & Mary Tennis will take on VCU, starting at noon Sunday. The matches will be at the Millie West Tennis Facility.

This and That

Watch cooks battle it out at the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Assocition’s annual Iron Chef Competition and food and wine expo. The program will include chefs from Williamsburg, Richmond and Virginia Beach fighting for food glory, along with heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine for the spectators. Starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Williamsburg Lodge, a portion of the proceeds support Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. Flip through pages and have some signed at the William & Mary Bookstore. This weekend will include Judy Bloodgood Bander signing “No Borrowed Glory;” Lynn Hosegood signing “People And Places Of Williamsburg;” James Thompson signing “Jefferson’s Enlightenment;” Jane D’alessandro Cox signing “Thomas Jefferson: From Boy To Man;” Mac Laird signing “Christanna;” and Jack and Judy Witt, Signing “Goshen Revisited.”
