A Yorktown High School senior is headed to the state level of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs art competition.
Caroline Coburn was one of four winners from the area to advance to the district level after competing at the Yorktown Public School and Membership Art Show. The event is put on annually by the Yorktown Woman’s Club and this year featured more than 90 art entries.
The Feb. 18 show also included music by the Yorktown Symphony Orchestra and cupcakes for the nearly 200 guests.
Coburn won within the high school age bracket. Hannah Yoon, an eighth-grader at Grafton Middle, was the winner for the sixth- through eighth-grade category for her watercolor and sharpie butterfly. Tabb Elementary School fourth-grader Drew Clemmons won her category with digital photography and in kindergarten through second grades, first grade Mount Vernon Elementary student Ryan Kizer earned top marks for his marker drawing.
In addition to student work, Yorktown Woman’s Club members showed their own artistic flair. Merle Burgess won the member prize for her needle work creations.
All student winners showed at the GFWC Tidewater District Art Show on March 7 and 8. There Coburn took home the Best in Show award, an honor bestowed on one piece from all participating clubs. Her piece, an acrylic on canvas, will be displayed at the GFWC Annual State Convention in Roanoke in May.
