This weekend is full of opportunities to get a breath of fresh air, either at a concert by a lake, snapping photos on a nature hike or collecting Easter eggs. You can also take a journey in local history or take the children for a fairy tale comedy.

Tunes
Local soprano Heather Sreves will offer a variety of pieces from operas at “A Night of Musical Delights & Treasures Benefit Concert.” The program at Unity Fellowship Church starts at 7 p.m. Friday.
William & Mary’s Chamber Winds presents their annual spring concert Friday evening. Starting at 8 p.m. in the Wren Building Great Hall, repertoire will include works from Mozart and Strauss, along with Johan Altenberg’s concerto for seven trumpets.
An outdoor music festival returns to the Sunken Gardens on the William & Mary campus, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday. Presented by the College’s student-run radio station, WCWMFest offers a lineup of bands and performance by the school’s sketch comedy group. William & Mary’s Women’s Chorus and the Williamsburg Women’s Chorus will join for a spring concert Saturday. Each group will perform several selections individually, as well as combine for a piece by William & Mary professor Brian Hulse. The concert is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
Absolute Acoustic will perform progressive acoustic rock at Cogan’s Deli and Sports Pub on Saturday. The duo starts at 8 p.m.
Hear a larger William & Mary ensemble sound Sunday afternoon when the Wind Ensemble plays their outdoor concert, “A Trumpet Spectacular.” At 2 p.m. at Matoaka Amphiteater, the program features American and Patriotic band classics for the whole family, as well as faculty and guest soloists.
All the World’s a Stage
“Rough Crossing” continues this weekend by the Williamsburg Players at their playhouse on Hubbard Lane. The show is set on board a trans-Atlantic voyage in the 1930s and tells the story of two playwrights struggling to finish their new music. Shows are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
A show for children and adults alike, “Once Upon a Time” comes to the Williamsburg Players playhouse Saturday morning. The show starts at 11 a.m., and features many of the classic fairy tales performed by a comedic duo.
Books and Knowledge
Historic Jamestowne celebrates the 400th anniversary of marriage of Pocahontas on Saturday with events running throughout the day. The special day of programming is part of The World of Pocahontas initiative at Historic Jamestowne, which includes lectures and exhibits throughout the anniversary year.
Watch Civil War history come to life Saturday and Sunday at Endview Plantation. Re-enactors and historians will re-create historic battles and camp life at the weekend program.
Head to the William & Mary Bookstore this weekend to pick up a new book and have it signed by the author. Slated to appear are Mac Laird, signing “Christanna;” Henrietta Ford, singing “The Grave House Guest” and Capt. Mike Brittingham, signing “Hard Facts: Terrorists Camps, the CIA, and the State of Homeland Security.”
Lafayette Jones Jr. will be giving a presentation and singing his book “My Great, Great Grandfather’s Journey to an Island of Freedom” at 3 p.m. Saturday at Freedom Park. Jones is a descendent of those who lived on the Free Black Settlement in that area, and the book records the evolution of slavery from its early years in the U.S. to life in the settlement. Tidewater Virginia Historical Society presents renowned author and lecturer Dr. Helen Rountree at 3 p.m. Sunday. She will discuss Pocahontas and the wedding at a free talk at the Williamsburg Regional Library.
Athletics
Head to Zable Stadium on Thursday through Saturday for some Tribe track and field. The team is competing in the 49th annual Colonial Relays.
Tribe baseball takes on UNCW in a series this weekend at Plumeri Park. Games start at 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Peninsula Youth Hockey Association starts an eight-week class Saturday afternoon in their Learn to Play Hockey program. Most players are 4 to 8 but participants have been as old as 14.
Tribe tennis will play against UMBC Sunday morning. Matches start at 10 a.m. at the Millie West Tennis Facility. They return at 4 p.m. against Morgan State.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Take a walk and snap some memories at York River State Park. Their ranger/photographer-guided photography hike starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Stick around the park until 10 a.m. for a workshop titled Backpacking 101. Visits can learn about proper clothing, equipment and safety for hiking and overnight trips.
Return Saturday evening for stargazing with the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Stargazers, starting at 6 p.m. The broad cliffs above the York River allow a great view of constellations, planets and other features of the night sky.
Walsingham Academy’s fourth annual Egg Hunt on the Green was rescheduled from last weekend to this Saturday due to weather. Families can head to the school lawn at 9 a.m. for face painting, juggling, activities and the egg hunt. RSVPs are requested.
Take in the fenders and wheels at a Cruise-In car show Saturday afternoon. The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Yorktown Masonic Lodge and is free for spectators. Pre-registration is requested for vehicles, with all proceeds from registration and food to benefit Bethel #39 Yorktown.
This and That
Saint Martins Episcopal Church will hold a Community Health Forum, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event hopes to begin a community dialogue on church support for mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as aging populations in the community. The forum is free and open to the public, but registration in advance is advised and required for lunch.
Brass Cannon Brewing in Toano celebrates its second anniversary Saturday. Their brewery tasting room opens at noon and there will be barbeque after 7 p.m., with discounted pints all day.
Walsingham Academy will host their 43rd annual auction “Bow Ties and Blue Jeans” starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. There will be food, live music and items for auction. All proceeds benefit the school’s digital technology program.
