Hear the pipes blare this weekend when organist Gail Archer takes the bench at Bruton Parish Church.
Archer is a Grammy-nominated, internationally renowned concert organist and recording artist with seven solo albums to her name. She will perform music from her latest album, “The Muse’s Voice: A Celebration of Women Composers,” at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Archer has played in spaces across the globe, and is known for her musical sensitivity and strong interpretations of pieces. Her recordings span music from the 17th century through modern day, and she is comfortable on a variety of organs from different eras.
One of the few female artists in a male-dominated field, Archer celebrates and advocates for female organists and composers.
“The Muse’s Voice” includes 20th- and 21st-century female composers Jennifer Higdon, Nadia Boulanger, Jeanne Demessieux and Judith Bingham.
“With the advent of this recording, I hope to share this captivating and important catalog of music to a much broader audience,” Archer said in a news release.
In addition to her programming choices, Archer created and curates a website devoted to female organists. The site applauds the accomplishments of women who play organ, and works to support them in their career goals through articles and musician spotlights.
In February, Archer kicked off her CD release tour at Central Synagogue in New York City, where she is director of artist and young organ artist recitals. She also serves as chairwoman of the music department at Barnard College and concert organist at Vassar College.
