A student-run organization will host a festival for families this weekend.
WCWM-FM 90.9, the radio station manned by undergraduates at the College of William & Mary, will present an outdoor festival of music and comedy from 2 to 11 p.m. Saturday.
The radio station was founded in 1959, and has a broadcast range of about 30 miles. Staffed by current students or faculty volunteering their time, the group holds concerts and music events throughout the year on and around campus.
The first WCWMFest was held in 2011, with bands The Mountain Goats and The Walkmen headlining. While no large festival was held last spring, the station is bringing back the event with the hope of it becoming an annual festivity for students and community members alike.
This year, the event returns to the College’s Sunken Garden with performances by four bands, as well as the school’s 7th Grade Sketch Comedy club.
The Dodos are be the festival’s headlining group for 2014. The San Francisco-based band is currently touring across the U.S. and Canada playing a mix of indie, folk and pop music. They have released five albums nationwide since their start in 2005, one of which reached No. 70 on the Billboard 200.
Also playing will be indie-pop band THE SUZAN from Japan, and Richmond groups Mirror Kisses – which plays ’80s pop-inspired tunes – and THE SLEEPWALKERS rock metal band.
For adults looking for additional merriment, Saudé Creek Vineyards will be selling wine at the event. Beer will be available from the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg to support their Eliminate Project, which seeks to end maternal and neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills nearly 60,000 babies worldwide every year.
Other local vendors will have food for purchase.
WCWMFest is sponsored by a number of area businesses, including Computer Concepts, Paul’s Deli, College Delly, Brickhouse Tavern, We Do It 4 U Laundry and BB&T Williamsburg. The event is also supported by the college and many student organizations.
