Happy first day of spring! This weekend brings many opportunities to support a cause, be it development for toddlers, technology for older children or health services for those in need. You can also breathe some fresh air on a nature hike or at a car show.

Music in the Air
High school spring musicals continue this weekend. March along to 76 trombones in Walsingham Academy’s production of “The Music Man,” ward off a man-eating plant at Tabb High School’s “Little Shop of Horrors” or traipse through Hollywood’s silent film era with Lafayette High School’s “Singin’ in the Rain.” More information on both of the shows is available in our education blog, Get Schooled.
The William & Mary Confucius Institute presents its first concert of Chinese traditional and folk music Friday evening. The program features two award-winning professional performers and offers the chance to learn about Chinese musical instruments and culture. The free concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Ewell Recital Hall on campus.
Hear live tunes over coffee or dessert at Aromas on Friday and Saturday night. Music starts at 8 p.m. with Louis Vangieri on Friday and Narissa Bond on Saturday.
The Williamsburg Mennonite Church presents a free concert by the Chamber Singers from Eastern Mennonite University. A reception will follow the 7 p.m. program.
Giving Back
Norge Dental Center will host its third annual Dentistry From the Heart event. The last two years have each served more than 200 adults with free services. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and patients will be helped on a first come, first served basis. See how the event has changed or how to get involved in the Hometown section.
The 19th annual Hampton Roads Harley Davidson Blood Drive will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Harley Davidson Showroom in Yorktown. All donors will receive a special edition T-shirt while supplies last, plus a $20 gift certificate to the Hampton Roads Harley Davidson store.
Child Development Resources will host its 36th annual Bid ‘n Buy Auction, starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Guests can bid on hundreds of live and silent auction items – including jewelry, toys and trips – at the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. There will also be a raffle for a 2014 Ford Fusion SE, all to benefit CDR’s programs for babies and toddlers. Learn more in the Hometown section.
The Harlem Ambassadors, a basketball and comedy team, will perform a program Sunday afternoon at Lafayette High School. The event will benefit Greenwood Christian Academy’s scholarships and tuition assistance, as well as upgrades to classroom technology. They take the court at 5 p.m., with pre-sale tickets strongly encouraged.
Learn Something New
The Creative Writing Program at William & Mary will sponsor a talk Thursday evening by former writer-in-residence Catherine Bowman and alumna Elizabeth Winder. The pair will discuss poet Sylvia Plath in a free program open to the public. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Tucker Hall theater.
The third annual Conference on the American Revolution opens Friday at the Woodlands Hotel in Colonial Williamsburg. America’s History LLC presents a group of historians and authors over three days. Find out more in the Hometown section.
Seafarers can attend the first of two boater safety courses on Saturday at Eco Discovery Park. The 9 a.m. class is free, but participants must also attend March 29 to take the final exam.
Tribe Athletics
The men’s tennis team takes on the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 3 p.m. Thursday. The match will be at the Millie West Tennis Facility. The Tribe returns against Dartmouth at 10 a.m. Saturday, and vs. JMU at 10 a.m. and against Hampton at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Watch Green and Gold baseball play against UMass Lowell this Friday. They will play at 7 p.m. at Plumeri Park. Catch more Saturday at 5 p.m. with a game vs. Brown.
The men’s golf team will play in the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate tournament at Kingsmill Resort, which starts Sunday and runs through next week.
This and That
The 7th annual York High School Falcons Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show rolls in at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event is free for guests, with a $20 vehicle entry fee. There will be a DJ, concessions, raffles and vendors at the high school through 3 p.m.
The Awesome Osprey Hike at York River State park highlights the seasonal bird of prey’s role in local ecosystem. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras and viewing gear on the ranger-guided hike, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Bid away at the Williamsburg Montessori School Auction and Celestial Celebration, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. The evening will include silent and live auctions, drinks, dinner and music at The Settlement at Powhatan Creek Community Clubhouse.
