Whether it is spring or winter outside, this weekend is full activities geared to families. The kids will have the chance to dance, watch a flick, hear a story or make an art project. If you don’t have youngsters, there is still music to hear, teams to support and dogs to adopt.

Children and Families
Middle-schoolers can dance the night away on Friday, at the York–Poquoson Sheriff’s Office D.A.R.E. Program’s county-wide middle school dance and activities night. The event will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Tabb high school, and all York County sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are invited to attend for an entry fee of $7. Activities will include a jousting arena, inflatable slide, obstacle course and climbing wall, as well as a video show and dance music.
Enjoy family movie night out and for free Friday at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center. The movie starts at 6 p.m., and is presented by James City County Parks & Recreation.
James City County Parks & Recreation also presents Family Fun Night at the JCC Recreation Center on Friday night. Starting at 6:30 p.m., tickets are $3 per person with free admission for children 12 and younger. There will be structured games in the gym, craft projects, board games and fun in the pool. Preregistration is recommended but not required.
Spend “An Evening Under the Parachutes” on Friday at VCE Family Focus’ fundraising gala. The event celebrates 30 years of programs for children and includes food, music, dancing, silent auction and a raffle. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at Legacy Hall in New Town. Find out more in the Hometown section.
Children can explore their creative side at This Century Art Gallery’s Kids’ Day. There will be printmaking, drawing and design, jewelry making, art projects, creative sculpting, collage and more. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and is free and open to the public.
Yankee Candle Village will host spring’s marshmallow treats Saturday to honor their new fragrance PEEPS® Marshmallow Chicks. The PEEPS mascot will be in attendance, and there will be a PEEPs art contest. The first 50 guests will have the opportunity to create their own edible PEEPS treat. The event is free and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Williamsburg Home Depot is hosting a scavenger hunt on Saturday morning, along with other games. The event starts at 11 a.m. and is free.
The William & Mary Bookstore on Merchants Square will host a free story hour every Saturday at 11 a.m. There will be snacks, crafts and a different story each week.
Film and Music
Unity Fellowship Church joins with Discover Teas for an evening of tea sampling and music Thursday. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the church and will feature tea and sweets and performances by three songwriters. Tickets are $15 at the door.
The Williamsburg Regional Library’s Italian Film Series continues Thursday evening with “The Night of the Shooting Stars.” The film starts at 7 p.m. in the library theater, and is cosponsored by the Colonial Italian American Organization.
The Moody Symphonic Band will present a concert of band and orchestral concert music Friday night, as well as hymn and gospel songs arranged in both contemporary and traditional styles. The program is free at the Williamsburg Community Chapel, and starts at 7 p.m.
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Shamrock the ‘Burg, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Williamsburg Community Building. There will be live music, beer and Irish stew at the 21 and older event. Learn more in this Hometown story.
The second Pope Benedict XVI Chamber Music Concert will be held Saturday at Saint Bede Catholic Church. Guest artists will perform Scarlatti’s “Cantata” for soprano and string quartet, a Mozart Quartet for flute and strings, and Paganini Trio for violin, cello, and guitar. The program starts at 7 p.m.
Tribe Athletics
Tribe baseball will play against Iona, 7 p.m. Friday night. The game will be at Plumeri Park.
See the women’s gymnastics team compete against Rutgers, North Carolina and Brown on Friday night. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in Kaplan Arena, and admission is free.
Learn Something New
William & Mary’s Reves Center for International Study will present two free lectures this week by their 2014 Kraemer Scholar-In-Residence, Haider Ala Hamoudi. The position is offered yearly, and provides the opportunity for a scholar specializing in Islamic law and governance to spend a short period of time at William & Mary sharing his or her expertise with the university community. Hamoudi will speak on “Islam in the Iraq Constitution” at 12:50 p.m. Thursday in room 141 of the law school, and on “Understanding the Sunni-Shi’a Split: From Theology to Law” at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Andrews Hall, room 101.
“Military Through the Ages” marches into Jamestown Settlement on Saturday and Sunday, the event’s 30th anniversary. The event will feature interactive exhibits, activities and hundreds of re-enactors representing centuries of military history. Find out more in the Hometown section.
Puppy Love
Virginia German Shepherd Rescue is hosting an adoption event from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at PetSmart. The nonprofit organization rescues, rehabilitates and finds homes for German Shepherds and mixes throughout the state.
