While the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA relies heavily on the support of volunteers, two people made special contributions to the center in the last year.
Jordan Rimel was named Teen Volunteer of the Year, and Suzanne Maggio earned the Volunteer of the Year award for 2013. Both were honored recently, along with several other volunteers, at the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA’s Annual Meeting at the Hampton Convention Center.
Last year, more than 250 business leaders, community advocates, parents and teens volunteered at the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA in Williamsburg.
The Y is a familiar and familial place for 12-year-old Rimel. Her mother is the group exercise coordinator, and her father is also a volunteer. A student at Providence Classical School, Rimel said in a news release she got involved as a counselor in training last summer to mentor children and give back to the community.
“Volunteering has changed my life,” Rimel said.
Maggio started volunteering with the R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA in 2012 for their annual Festival of Trees event. She quickly became a board member and chaired last year’s fundraiser for scholarships for community programs at the Y.
A native of Pennsylvania, Maggio moved to Williamsburg in 2003. She has a long pedigree of volunteer work, and is currently active with Providence Classical School, Newtown United Methodist Church and Williamsburg Christian Academy.
“I volunteer for the YMCA because to me the Y represents the community at large with a cross-section of all. The YMCA remains an important foundation and one that I want everyone to know about all it has to offer,” Maggio said in the release.
