Love is in the air—or maybe it’s just the smell of popcorn. This Valentine’s Day weekend is full of film activities, in addition to live music and Tribe athletics. Grab your sweetheart, or your pal, or your favorite box of chocolates, and check out the local happenings.

Lights, Camera, Action
In a bit of twist, Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Series in February focuses on movies that deal with the Other Woman and conflicted love affairs. The film this week is “Carrie” (1952), based on Theodore Dreiser’s early 20th century novel, “Sister Carrie.” It stars Laurence Olivier opposite Miriam Hopkins and Jennifer Jones, and starts at 2 p.m. in the library’s theater.
W&M’s Global Film Festival opens Thursday evening, and continues with film screenings and related events through Sunday. See the full schedule with brief descriptions of the films here.
For even more film action, head back to WRL theatre for the Italian Film Festival, which shows one piece each month. Co-sponsored by the library and the Colonial Italian American Organization, February’s Italian film is “Fiorile.” It will play for free at 7 p.m.
Music
Head to the Williamsburg Pottery on Friday afternoon to hear some harmonic tunes. Buddy Wakefield and friends will present a free, interactive and kid-friendly event. The concert starts at 1 p.m.
Members of The Virginia Symphony present “Aesop’s Fables,” a musical program for the whole family, 11 a.m. Saturday at the Williamsburg Regional Library Theatre. The performers will narrate to violin and cello music to make the stories come alive. The concert is part of “The Virginia Symphony Presents…,” a series made possible by Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library, and admission is free.
Saint Bede Catholic Church will host the first concert in the new Pope Benedict XVI Chamber Music Series. Inspired by Pope Benedict XVI’s promotion of music and the arts, the program features the Schubert “Trout” Quintet, Mozart “Kegelstatt” Trio, and Saint-Saens Septet. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the church, with a suggested donation of $10.
Tribe Sports
Men’s baseball plays their home season opener Friday afternoon. The Tribe will hit against Army, starting at 4 p.m. at Plumeri Park. The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Saturday’s game is Military Appreciation Day, with free admission for active duty military, veterans and their families.
At 5 p.m. Friday, see men’s tennis take on Binghamton. The match will be at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center. The team will return 10 a.m. Saturday to play against the University of Richmond, and then again at 5 p.m. vs. Villanova.
Tribe women’s lacrosse takes on Duke at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game against the Blue Devils will be at Martin Family Stadium on the Albert-Daly Field.
The men’s basketball game Saturday is Boy Scout and Cub Scout Day. The Tribe tips off against Towson at 4 p.m. in Kaplan Arena.
Adorn yourself in purple, and get into Sunday’s women’s basketball game for free. The 2 p.m. match against UNC Wilmington promotes Alzheimer’s disease awareness, and will be held in Kaplan Arena.
Soak Up Some History
Getting Into “Hot Water,” an informal talk presented by the James City County Parks & Recreation department, will explore the importance of the Hot Water Tract, site of today’s Freedom Park. The site is of significance to Bacon’s Rebellion, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and the free program will focus on its relationship with the Middle Passage. The talk starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center.
All national parks are offering free admission for Presidents Day weekend. In the Historic Triangle, enjoy a free visit to Yorktown Battlefield or Historic Jamestowne from Saturday through Monday.
