Local Organizations Earn Grants for Dental Health Programs
The Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation recently awarded grants to 30 Virginia oral health organizations and educational institutions. This year’s funding totaled $716,000 and focuses on assisting free and community-based health clinics and dental safety net programs, public oral health education initiatives and dental curricula at Virginia universities.
Three local groups were recognized by Delta Dental.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula was awarded $5,000 for their Smart Smiles® At the Dentist program. For the support of a dental practitioner and assistant, Lackey Free Clinic received $10,000, and Old Towne Medical and Dental Center was also give $10,000 for its adult dental services.
“By providing much-needed funding to these 30 fine organizations, their focus can be on meeting the oral health needs of their communities, delivering public oral health information and educating future dental professionals instead of worrying about how to keep the lights on,” said George A. Levicki, president and CEO, Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation in a news release.
In 2013, Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation grant award recipients were able to provide dental care to more than 8,124 children and 21,528 adults who had previously been unable to access care.

Iron-Bound Gym Raises $800 for Hospice House
Members and guests came to Iron-Bound Gym ready to work Jan. 23. They participated in the gym’s Zumba/Bike-a-thon.
Refreshments were served at the free event, and all donations benefitted the Hospice House of Williamsburg.
