What You’ll Do: Jan. 30-Feb. 2

W.Y.D2This Sunday is Groundhog Day, and with the recent deluge of snow, we’re not feeling too optimistic about spring being around the corner. This weekend you have the chance to stare down the groundhog responsible for making that choice, as well as avoid the snow with a movie or museum.

Want to see your event included in What You’ll Do? We pull these ideas from our community calendar, which you can find on the right side of WYDaily.com. Submitting to the calendar is free and easy, so make sure to add upcoming events for your group or organization.

Arts

Escape from the cold, at least mentally—Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Series in January features movies set in sunny locales. At 2 p.m. Thursday in the library’s theatre, watch “Moon Over Miami” (1941), a peppy Technicolor musical.

The Williamsburg Player’s production of “The Miracle Worker” concludes this weekend, with plays Thursday through Sunday. See the Hometown story for more information on the group and current show.

The Williamsburg Area Music Teachers will present a recital on Saturday, titled “Divertimenti…Celebrating 5 & 50.” The concert marks the fifth recital for the group, which benefits the scholarship program of the Williamsburg Music Club, now in its 50th year. Read the Hometown story for more information on those organizations. The music starts at 3:30 at the King of Glory Lutheran Church.

Learn Something New

Virginia Cooperative Extension Family Focus presents the first in its latest series of child care classes, “Here Now and Down the Road, Tips for Loving Parents.” At 10:15 a.m. Fridays, the class is geared to parents of children in preschool through second grade and will offer guidance on promoting social-emotional health and growth, creativity and independent thinking. The course will be held at York River Baptist Church.

The Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory center have a new theme for the month of February: “From Africa to Virginia.” Admission is free for residents of the Historic Triangle (with proof), and guests can learn about the plight of Africans in Virginia through gallery exhibits and interpretive presentations. The program starts Saturday.

Bundle up and enjoy a starry night Saturday at York River State Park. The Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Stargazers will lead a free program, starting at 5:30 p.m. The forecast predicts warmer temperatures and at least partly cloudy skies.

This and That

William & Mary men’s tennis takes on Princeton on Thursday evening. The Tribe vs. Tigers matchup starts at 6 p.m. at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center.

See if the Virginia Living Museum’s groundhog sees his shadow Sunday, as the museum marks Groundhog Day with a wide array of programs and activities. The Virginia Living Museum groundhog is the official groundhog forecasting weather for Hampton Roads. The event starts at noon in Newport News.
