With Thanksgiving and Christmas both on the horizon, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is organizing ways to give back to the community.
On Nov. 19 and 20, the office will hold the Fill a Cruiser Food Drive. YPSO is asking for donations from the public to pack a car with non-perishable food items and toiletries.
The car will be parked in Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Digg’s designated parking space at 301 Goodwin Neck Road in Yorktown from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They will fill the car on those days, but will be accepting donations for the whole week of Nov. 18 through 22.
Fill a Cruiser will benefit Avalon, the Natasha House and local food pantries in need.
In December, the Sheriff’s Office will hold the 12th annual Shop with a Sheriff campaign. Sixty children from York County and the City of Poquoson will be selected to go Christmas shopping with York-Poquoson deputies at the Tabb K-Mart on Dec. 14.
The participating children are chosen with the help of local churches and schools.
In order to make Shop with a Sheriff possible, its committee is hoping to raise $9,000 before the Dec. 14 shopping date, and are turning to the business, organizations and individuals in the community for assistance.
Checks can be made payable to “Shop with a Sheriff” and mailed to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office “Shop with a Sheriff,” P.O. Box 99, Yorktown, VA 23690. All donations are tax deductible.
