All week, W&M’s chapters of Oxfam America and Students for Stop Hunger Now will be throwing a food drive that will send nonperishables to FISH, a local nonprofit that helps provide food and clothing for the needy.
“When people think of hunger, they often think of staving children in Africa, or another cause distant from home,” President of W&M’s Students for Stop Hunger Now Kate Brown said in a new release. “But hunger is a real issue in our hometowns, among our friends and neighbors, and we may not even know it.”
The drive will take place from Monday through Friday and donations can be made by dropping off goods at donation boxes that can be found a few places around town: Aroma’s, Retro’s, Pita Pit and The Crust.
Preferred donations in the food drive are nonperishables with the suggested items of canned Spam, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, canned chicken & tuna, cereals, Saltine crackers, boxed macaroni & cheese, applesauce, canned fruits, powdered milk, rice, beans, grape jelly, peanut butter, canned vegetables and canned soups.
“We want to make sure that the donations we receive will provide local needy citizens with tasty meals that also satisfy their daily nutritional needs,” Vice President of W&M’s Oxfam chapter Daniela Sainz said in the release.
