The York County Board of Supervisors is searching for applicants for a number of boards, commissions and panels. Applying to participate is a great way to get involved with local government.
Supervisors Seek Applicants for Employee Grievance Panel
The York County Board of Supervisors is looking for applicants to serve on the Employee Grievance Panel, a group that solves employee grievances via the interpretation of government policies and procedures.
The panel meets when a grievance reaches their level. Consideration is given to applicants who have experience with employee-management relations. The supervisors try to appoint someone from management of private business, from the employee ranks of private business and someone with knowledge of and experience in employee dispute mediation.

Applicants Needed for Parks and Rec Advisory Board
If Parks and Recreation sounds appealing, consider applying for appointment to the York County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
The board advises the York County Board of Supervisors on issues pertaining to parks and recreational services. The board meets on the third Thursday of every other month.

Registration Open for Sheriff’s Citizen Academy
Sign up now for a 43-hour training course with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, where you can learn how deputies do their jobs and about the criminal justice system.
Topics include 911 communications, hiring, training, policies and procedures, criminal investigations, criminal law, DUI investigations, family violence, narcotics enforcement, tactical operations, hostage negotiations, jail operations and firearms use.
The course is open to all York County and Poquoson residents who are at least 18 years old. Registrants must pass a background check.

Mark Your Calendar for Yorktown Art Stroll
The second annual Yorktown Art Stroll is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 29.
The event pairs local businesses with local artists, allowing attendees the chance to walk through Yorktown and check out local artwork for sale inside local businesses. Participants include Riverwalk Landing and the Freight Shed.
The artists will be on site to interact with the public at this free event. Visitors will get a chance to see all manner of paintings, glass, drawings, photography, jewelry, pottery, painted furniture, basketry and turned wood.
Sponsors include The Yorktown Arts Foundation, the York County Arts Commission and York County.

Senior Center to Host AARP Driver Safety Course
You can also register for an AARP Driver Safety Program, which takes place on the afternoons of Sept. 23 and Sept. 24. Many car insurance providers offer a discount if you take the course. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. The class does not require you to get behind the wheel.

Skate, Rattle & Roll Resumes
Visit Dare Elementary School on Fridays for family roller skating. The first session, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. is for kindergartners through fifth-graders. The second session, from 9 to 11 p.m., is for middle school students.
Admission is $5 including skate rentals. Rollerblade or inline skate rentals cost $3. Snacks will be on sale.
