This Century Art Gallery’s annual September fundraiser is right around the corner.
Art Speaks: Small & Great will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Williamsburg Community Building. Artwork at this year’s event will be signed by the artist who created it, and those artworks will fit within a 16-by-16-inch space. Pieces at the previous galas had been sized at 5-by-7.
Within the size parameter, artwork varies in size and form. Some works are paintings or photographs but others are sculptures or three-dimensional works.
All flat artwork comes framed and ready to hang, while three-dimensional works are ready to display.
“We think this is a nicer arrangement for the artist and our guests,” said Pat Rublein, a This Century Art Gallery volunteer who is co-chairing this year’s gala.
In addition to the more than 100 works of art from more than 75 artists, a silent auction will also serve as fundraiser.
Rublein said items for the silent auction invlude a beach house vacation, a cocktail party for 30, jewelry from the Kingfisher Gallery and a yacht party.
This Century Art Gallery has been in business for 50 years. These fundraisers raise money to support the gallery’s educational programming.
“The mission of the event really is set up obviously to raise funds for our gallery programs, but it really fits in with the mission of the gallery,” Rublein said.
The gala event will give attendees the chance to peruse the works before being able to purchase them at 6:45 p.m. If two attendees want to purchase the same work, Rublein said a coin toss is used to determine the purchaser.
Several local artists will be presenting works for sale, including Merrilee Cleveland who recently moved back to the area from Colorado, Betty Babb, Carlton Abbott, Elaine Abbott and Jan Ledbetter.
“There are just some wonderful working artists in our midst and this is an opportunity for us to show them off a little bit, too,” Rublein said.
