If the kids are complaining that they’re bored, check out the Living Museum or a performance by the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown, or head over to the Estuaries Day celebration at York River State Park. Film and music
Actress and singer-songwriter Bridgit Mendler is performing at Busch Gardens on Saturday. Aside from being a popular actress, Mendler is well known for her hit single “Ready or Not.” The park has been hosting some great artists this summer; all concerts are held at the Royal Palace Theatre and are included with admission. Check out the calendar to get show time information. Award-winning pop-rock group Hot Chelle Rae returns to Busch Gardens on Sunday for a concert – you can get those details on the calendar, too.
Enjoy Marilyn Monroe’s last movie “The Misfits” (co-starring Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift) on Sunday, one of the free outdoor movies on Prince George Street showing on Sunday evenings through the summer. Make sure to bring a lawn chair! Here’s the calendar link if you need details.
Thursdays you can watch a free flick at the Williamsburg Regional Library – this month’s theme is “Bad Vacations.” This week they’ll be showing “Don’t Drink the Water,” (1969), a Woody Allen comedy that stars Jackie Gleason, Estelle Parsons, Ted Bessell and Michael Constantine. Here’s the plot: during a stopover in Eastern Europe, a caterer from Jersey and his family are accused of being spies and end up besieged in the U.S. embassy. If you’d like more details, take a peek at the calendar.
Something to Get You on Your Feet
Sunday is the American Tribal Style belly dance fair at ArtInspired Center in Yorktown. It’s a fun afternoon of belly dance – have a drum? Bring it along! There will also be henna body painting, snacks and door prizes. Admission is free. Get more information on the calendar.
Family Fun
The Williamsburg Regional Library is offering free family movies on the weekends this summer, and this is your last chance to see one! On Saturday, they’re showing “March of the Penguins.” Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this true story of the lives of penguins will amaze your eyes and astonish your heart. Join the penguins as they face winter, search for food and protect their young. On Sunday, they’re showing “Hachi,” a movie based on a true story that took place in Japan before World War I. The film, starring Richard Gere, Karen Allen, and adorable Akitas, moves the setting to the United States where a music professor finds a lost Akita puppy. Their relationship is so strong, that when the professor dies, Hachi spends the rest of his life waiting for him at the train station. The movie is beautifully staged and it is a memorable story about which several children’s books are available. Both films are rated G, and you can find out when they’re playing by looking here.
At the Virginia Living Museum on Saturday, explore the five senses and find out how they compare to our furry, feathery and finny friends. Discover how good your sense of smell is compared with a fox’s. Test your eyesight to learn if it’s as accurate as a hawk’s. Use touch to feel vibrations in water and determine if you could survive as a fish. Also, explore Riverside’s interactive family health display or stop by Tidewater Physical Therapy’s Backpack Weighing Station and let your child try on a full backpack weighing closest to what they carry during the school year. All the information you need is on our calendar.
The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown, made up of children ages 10 to 18, will march on Sunday and perform 18th-century field music, and they’ll also talk about the role of the fifes and drums during the American Revolution. Here’s the calendar link with more information.

Celebrate Estuaries Day at York River State Park on Saturday, which kicks off this year with a race to benefit local nonprofit SpiritWorks Foundation.
