This weekend, there are several free movies playing around town, and you can also go see the last show of this season’s Virginia Shakespeare Festival. There are several historic goings-on that might interest you, as well as some family fun that the kids will enjoy. Read on for all the details!
Learn Something New
Saturday is Healthy Living Day at the Virginia Living Museum. Stop by and discover fun ways to get healthy, reduce stress, and stay fit. How clean are your hands? Put them to the blacklight test. Faculty and students will also perform blood pressure checks, have a healthy diet display, and provide simple exercises for children. Stop by Tidewater Physical Therapy’s Backpack Weighing Station and let your child try on a backpack weighing closest to what they carry during the school year. A physical therapist will talk to you and your child about best practices to avoid back and shoulder pain. The calendar has all the details, so go on and take a peek!
The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile, an interactive museum on wheels housed in a 53’ expandable tractor-trailer, will be at Yankee Candle Village this weeknd. The HistoryMobile draws together stories from all over Virginia and uses state-of-the-art technology and immersive exhibit spaces to present individual stories of the Civil War from the perspectives of those who experienced it – young and old, enslaved and free, soldiers and civilians. The new theme this month at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center is “Pastimes of Colonial Virginia,” which will feature games and other diversions of 17th- and 18th-century Virginia shown through hands-on activities and interpretive programs. Visitors can play corncob darts, ninepins, quoits, mancala and nine-men’s morris. Sounds like fun! Here’s the calendar link with more information.
You can also join in the commemoration of First Assembly Day at Historic Jamestowne on Saturday, the anniversary of the first legislative assembly in English North America. Programs will explore the development of government in Virginia and the significance of the first meeting of elected officials in the colony in 1619. The calendar has details.
Theatre and Films
If you’re up for some mystery and ghostly whatnot, grab a ticket for the Virginia Shakespeare Festival’s “The Turn of the Screw,” a play based on the novella by Henry James. Look at the calendar for ticket information and show times, as there are several showings this weekend. This is the last show of the VSF season, so be sure to check this out before it’s gone!
Sundays are free outdoor movies on Prince George Street! Bring you chairs or blankets and watch “Lincoln,” presented by Stars & Stripes on Prince George Street and by Blue Talon Bistro. The weekend means free flicks at the Williamsburg Regional Library Theatre! On Thursday, you can catch the classic film “Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation” (1962). Jimmy Stewart plays a stressed-out businessman whose plans for a quiet month by the sea evaporate when his entire family and their myriad problems descend on his beach retreat. There are also free family films on Saturday and Sunday – “First Dog” is about Danny, a foster child, who is befriended by a lost dog, which happens to belong to the President of the United States. “October Sky” will transport you to Coalwood, West Virginia, in 1957 where working in the coal mines was a way of life. But when Homer Hickam, Jr. (Jake Gyllenhaal) sees Sputnik in the sky, he dares to break away from tradition and reach for the stars. Look here for info on those two films.
Music
Thursday is the always-fun Shagging on the Riverwalk beach-music concert series over at Yorktown’s RIverwalk. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy some beachy tunes. The details are all right here.
Check out The King’s Brass on Friday night at the Williamsburg Community Chapel! This family-friendly concert with Tim Zimmerman and The King’s Brass features hymn classics with a contemporary flair. The band features three trumpets, three trombones, a tuba, percussion and keyboards. Look on the calendar for details.
Berret’s Taphouse Grill is featuring some live entertainment this weekend: Stone’s Throw is playing on Friday night, and Beet’s Collective is playing on Saturday night.
Family Fun
Stop by the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex on Saturday for the Family Festival! They’ll have free food, games, inflatables, dunk tank, petting zoo, local vendors and lots more. Here’s the calendar link with more information.
Join in the kids’ fishing tournament on Woodstock Pond at York River State Park. Children 15 and younger can catch bass, bluegill, and crappie for prizes. Bring your own rod and reel; the park has a limited amount of tackle and bait. You’ll need to make reservations, so look at the calendar to get details.
Don’t Forget the Farmer’s Markets!
Toano Farmers Market is open year round on Saturdays and features Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs, Heidi’s Home Grown, plus a bunch of produce vendors. It’s at the corner of Forge and Richmond Roads in Toano from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Yorktown Market Days takes place along the waterfront at Riverwalk Landing from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday, too. It features seasonal fruits and vegetables along with fresh seafood, eggs, poultry, beef and pork, fresh bread, cheese, baked goods, peanuts, organic and gluten free products, coffee, art, live music and much more.
The Williamsburg Farmer’s Market is also going on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon on Duke of Gloucester Street. You’ll find all kinds of scrumptious produce as well as other gourmet and fresh-from-the-farm foods.
This weekend is the Norge/Williamsburg Small Animal Sale and Market on Saturday and Sunday at the Williamsburg Tractor Supply Company Store. There will be over 25 vendors, including Blue Summer Moon Farm, A Rich Oasis Farm, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Kittys Knits and Bits, Spirit Beads Jewelry, Notes of Whimsy, and many more. This weekend, get free admission to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum if you’re a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch cardholder as part of the Museums on Us program.
