Opera in Williamsburg will present a performance of Verdi’s opera “La Traviata” on April 23.
Opera in Williamsburg is the brainchild of opera lover and William & Mary professor Naama Zahavi-Ely, who decided last year to bring live, fully staged opera performances with professional opera singers to a Williamsburg audience.
The creative team of the “L’Elisir d’Amore,” a performance staged in Williamsburg last October, will produce “La Traviata.” The show will take place at 8 p.m. at Kimball Theatre in Merchant’s Square, and will feature Emily Duncan-Brown as Violetta, Won Whi Choi as Alfredo, and Jose Sacin as Germont.
“I saw Emily as Violetta, and she is amazing,” says Zahavi-Ely, who has met most of the artists in the upcoming performance in Tel Aviv at the IVAI summer program of Joan Dornemann and Paul Nadler of the Metropolitan Opera.
The singers will work under the guidance of Argentinian New-York based Jorge Parodi of Opera Hispanica, Julliard faculty member Carlos Conde, and up-and-coming French-Canadian stage director Mathieu Guertin.
New York City-based pianist Jamison Livsey will be joined by local violin, cello, and clarinet players, and by dancers of SI Dance Studio of Williamsburg.
Tickets are available at the Kimball Theatre, by calling 1-800-HISTORY, or by visiting the Opera in Williamsburg website at www.operainwilliamsburg.org. Tickets are $45 ($40 for seniors, teachers/faculty, and military; $15 for students).
