Hometown: Parents Invited to Children’s Behavioral Health Symposium

Colonial Behavioral Health is hosting a children’s behavioral health symposium for parents and service providers this month.

Called “Together We Can… Creating a Caring Community for Our Children,” the behavioral health symposium will address the behavioral health needs of children in the community. It is funded by a grant from the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation with additional support from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

The symposium “is a community event perfect for parents and caregivers to come and learn more about the mental health, substance use and intellectual disability issues facing the children of our community,” says Leigh Carroll-Stump, event organizer and coordinator of the Greater Williamsburg Child Assessment Center.

“We will have numerous service providers on site to connect families with much-needed resources and we have several excellent speakers lined up.”

Both parents and service providers are encouraged to attend; participants will get a chance to attend workshops covering topics that include substance use, psychotropic medications, advocacy, financial planning, self-harm, trauma and more.

Keynote speakers include Gina Gallagher and Patricia Konjoain, authors of “Shut Up about Your Perfect Kid.” Margaret Nimmo Crowe, policy director at Voices for Children, will also speak at the event.

The symposium is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 18 at the Williamsburg Hotel and Conference Center at 50 Kingsmill Road.

Registration is free and must be completed online no later than April 10. For more information and to register visit the event website.
