James City County will be hosting a training course for people interested in becoming foster or adoptive parents for children facing various challenges.
The upcoming Foster/Adoptive Parent Training is geared towards those who are interested in providing care for children with attachment disorders, mental health issues, behavioral challenges and Autism, as well as those who are medically fragile or are teenagers.
The sessions will begin on April 11 and run Thursday evenings through June 13. The classes will be held at the James City County Human Services building and dinner will be provided.
James City County offers guidelines for residents interested in becoming a foster parent. An ideal candidate is someone who is at least 21 years old, has a source of income, can provide a safe and healthy home, has enough living space for a child, can help a child cope with separation from his family and with the effects of abuse and neglect, and can let the child go when the time comes.
For additional information on the class or to register, contact Gwen Mason at (757) 259-3215 or email her at [email protected]. Registration must be completed by April 8.
