What You’ll Do: March 28-31

Are we ready for spring yet, or what? Looks like at least there is no snow in the forecast this weekend, plus there are lots of fun things to do around town, so we’ll count the weekend a success already. You can figure out what you’ll be doing for fun around town by looking below at our suggestions on the best bets for weekend fun right here in W.Y.D, which stands for What You’ll Do.

We pull these ideas off our community calendar, which you can find on the right side of WYDaily.com. Submitting to the calendar is free and easy, so make sure to add upcoming events for your group or organization.

This weekend there’s lots of stuff going on, including a few visits from the Easter Bunny, a tribute show to Maureen McGovern, a hike at York River State Park and lots more. Read on!

Family Fun

Easter is around the corner, and the Easter Bunny is a busy fella! He’ll be hiding eggs at Warhill Sports Complex Saturday morning. There will be egg hunts for different age groups at different times, plus inflatables, face painting and more. Look at the calendar to find out more details.

Using his amazing magical abilities, the Easter Bunny will also hop over to Stone House Presbyterian Church Saturday morning to hide some more eggs for the kids. This free event will feature an egg hunt, the story of Easter, a cake walk and games. Here’s the calendar link with more information.

Guests will get a chance to meet Miss Virginia, Rosemary Willis, at the Virginia Living Museum on Saturday. A native of Chesapeake and currently a student at The College of William and Mary, Miss Virginia’s platform issue is “Get Moving Today for a Healthier Tomorrow.” She will be showing her exercise video in the “Through the Eyes of the Eagle” exhibit on children’s health. Check out the calendar to find out when she’ll be at the VLM.

Outdoor Activities

Hike York River State Park’s Taskinas Creek Trail, one of the most beautiful and challenging hikes in eastern Virginia, this Saturday morning. Experience the elevation changes of rollercoaster like ravines and take in the panoramic views of the marsh and observe the wildlife. Here’s the calendar link if you’re interested.

Performance and Film

The Kimball Theatre in Merchant’s Square is presenting “Maureen McGovern: A Long and Winding Road” on Saturday night. This is an entertaining and introspective look at the songs that inspired her before her Academy Award-winning hit song “The Morning After.” A nostalgic tribute to Maureen’s roots as a folk singer, this concert celebrates her love affair with the early works of Jimmy Webb, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Randy Newman and other groundbreaking singer-songwriters from her youth. The repertoire includes an eclectic selection of material including “The Circle Game,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” “The Moon’s A Harsh Mistress,” “Let It Be,” “Fire and Rain,” and many others. Visit the Kimball website for details.

The Williamsburg Regional Library will be showing “The Great Caruso” (1951) as part of its Thursday afternoon film series this week. The movie recreates Caruso’s career, from his start as a young cafe singer through his 18-year triumph at the Met, centering on his happy marriage to Dorothy Benjamin and his troubles with her family. The film will take place at 2 p.m. at the library theatre.

Books and Talks

The College of William and Mary Bookstore is hosting several authors this weekend for book-signings: Phyllis Haislip, signing “Between The Lines,” Wilford Kale, signing “Hark Upon the Gale,” Lynn Hosegood, signing “People & Places of Williamsburg,” Henrietta Ford, signing “The Grave House Guest,” and Feather Foster, signing “First Ladies.” These are happening at various times this weekend, so visit the bookstore’s website to get more information.

 Fundraisers

The Williamsburg Jaycees are hosting their Second Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Warhill Sports Complex. The entry fee is $45 per team with tournament proceeds going to support Grove Christian Outreach. Go cheer for your favorite team or rustle up a team of your own! Find more on the calendar.

Odds and Ends

The Community Services Building on Waller Mill Road is hosting an indoor flea market on Saturday. There will be over 30 vendors with antiques, furniture, collectibles, quilts and more. Here’s the calendar link if you’d like more information.

Have a question about Microsoft Word, navigating the Internet or using copy-and-paste? Free, walk-in computer assistance is available on Thursday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Williamsburg Regional Library on a first-come, first-served basis from WRL computer volunteers. Don’t forget that every weekend you can stop by the Toano Farmers Market, which is open year round on Saturdays and features Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs, Heidi’s Home Grown, plus an array of produce vendors during the year. It’s at the corner of Forge and Richmond Roads in Toano from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
