Hometown: Welcome New Local Master Naturalists

he Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists recently graduated 21 new members from its basic training program.

New volunteers started their training last September and completed required classes and field trips early in March.

The Virginia Master Naturalists Program is a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities.

Members in the local chapter are busy in the Historic Triangle doing things such as mulching the native plant gardens at York River State Park; readying bluebird boxes for spring at Freedom Park; wildlife mapping at New Quarter Park and working at an exhibit booth at the recent JCC Recreation Expo.

The statewide sponsors of the program are Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

The next class will begin training in early September. For more information, contact the chapter at [email protected] or visit its website.
