The Williamsburg Symphonia selected Carolyn Keurajian as its new Executive Director on Monday.

Since its creation in 1984, the Symphonia has aimed to bring high-quality musical performances to the Williamsburg area, to help educate people of all ages about music and to introduce young audiences to classical music in a way they can enjoy and understand.

Keurajian recently moved to the area from New Jersey, and “she brings to the organization an impressive background in education, event management and musical performance,” according to a press release from the Symphonia.

“Keurajian impressed the selection committee with her broad, but pertinent experiences that will best serve the professional chamber orchestra’s needs as it celebrates its 30th anniversary year and continues to fulfill its educational and entertainment mission.”

Keurajian most recently helped the Williamsburg Choral Guild and Literacy for Life put together the fundraiser the “A Cappella Sing-Off” that took place in December.

She was accountable for all aspects of the event including production, promotion, logistics, website development, and motivating contestants to utilize their own contacts to enhance the fundraising, according to the release.

The first task Keurajian will undertake is promotion and production of the “Classical Mystery Tour,” a tribute to The Beatles with the Symphonia under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Janna Hymes. This event, originally scheduled for September as the “Music Under the Stars” program in Merchants Square, will take place at the Williamsburg Lodge on February 19.

“It’s such an exciting time to be joining the Symphonia,” Keurajian said. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a talented and vibrant organization and look forward to encouraging people of all ages to experience the joy of attending a Symphonia concert.

“In addition to bringing great music to our community, the Symphonia plays an important role in encouraging young musicians throughout Williamsburg. One of my goals is to provide Williamsburg area children with an expanded menu of mentoring and learning opportunities.”

Keurajian will replace Harry Burton, who served for 10 years and retired at the end of 2012.
