History Happenings
Friday is Yorktown Day, which starts the Yorktown Victory Weekend to commemorate the 231st anniversary of America’s momentous Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown. Friday’s events include patriotic ceremonies, a parade, a performance by the Fifes and Drums and more. There are also a variety of engaging hands-on military interpretive programs and tours throughout the weekend at Yorktown Victory Center and Yorktown Battlefield. While you’re in Yorktown, stop by the Watermen’s Museum for the York River Maritime Heritage Festival. You can celebrate the rich maritime tradition and history of the York River with activities that include re-enactments, sea chantey singers, nautical music, pirate raids and displays. There will be a creative craft competition starting at 1 p.m., but make sure you register by 11 a.m. Also, the museum will host a group sing-off competition at 3 p.m. – if you have a small group that’s ready to sing maritime songs, sign up by 2 p.m. Visit the museum website for details.
The Arts
Come and take a journey through three one acts on Saturday night at the Williamsburg Library Theater. The first is The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain with music selections from The Apple Tree; the next is Trifles about how a murder case is unraveled through the simplest things. The third is an adaptation of A Nice Place to Visit which explores how your actions on earth can affect whether you make it to heaven. Click here for details.
The Bena Music Series presents two-time Grammy winner Pam Rose performs on Sunday night at Arts on Main in Gloucester Village. Pam Rose has toured with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Sting and Tommy Emmanuel. She is joined by award-winning songwriter Kim Person. Look at the calendar for more.
Fundraisers
Saturday night is the Junior Women’s Club’s Casino Night at New Town’s Towne Bank. Tickets include an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, games and a silent auction. Look at the calendar for more.
Spend all day Saturday at Newport News Park, where one of the area’s biggest classic car shows will be held. It’s a benefit for Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and you’ll be able to see hundreds of classic, antique, hot rod and show vehicles. The annual Crapolfest weekend, which celebrates the life of former Tribe soccer player Andy Crapol, is scheduled for Saturday. In its fourth year of existence, this year’s edition of Crapolfest will feature a 5K run, a one-mile fun run/walk, a golf outing at the Golden Horseshoe and a mini golf event with all proceeds going towards the Andrew E. Crapol Soccer Scholarship Fund. Visit the event website for details.
Markets
Don’t forget that the local farmer’s markets are still happening, and now is the time for all of fall’s harvest favorites!
The Williamsburg Farmers Market on Saturday will feature Pumpkins, honey, pork, peanuts, oysters, fall produce, and cut flowers. Also, Chef Lewis of Traditions at the Lodge will be cooking at the Chefs Tent at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Traditions will celebrate the market’s 10th Anniversary with cupcakes for customers and Twisted Folksters will play from 9 until 11 a.m. Master Gardeners will answer composting questions, too. Toano Farmers Market is open Saturday, too, and features Bob’s Sausage Company, Rainbow Eggs, Heidi’s Home Grown, plus an array of other produce vendors.
