Hometown: Upcoming Auction Keeps Artist Names Secret

A necklace created by Linda and Tim Caviness, of Kingfisher Jewelry, will be the featured item in This Century Art’s upcoming silent auction.

Attendees at This Century Art Gallery’s upcoming auction will be bidding based purely on the merit of what they see, not the artists’ signatures.

The gallery will present “5X7 Art on the QT” from 5:30-8 p.m. Sept. 23. Artists have donated original pieces of art measuring 5 inches by 7 inches that will be sold through silent auction. The artists’ names are only revealed after the art purchase. All proceeds will support This Century Art’s art education programs and building art awareness in Williamsburg.

This Century Art Gallery is revealing the source of its featured art work, however. Tim and Linda Caviness, a husband and wife design team, have donated a pearl necklace that is featured on the promotional materials for the event. The necklace is made of blister pearls, which remain attached to their shell.

The Cavinesses are inspired by Southwest art and enjoy collecting semiprecious stones and materials from around the world. Their inspiration begins with the stone. “It’s virtually impossible to make a copy,” Tim said in a press release. “The stone will tell you what it wants to be.”

Tim completed his silversmith apprenticeship in Sante Fe, New Mexico in 2000 and later, he and Linda established Kingfisher Jewelry. In their spare time, they volunteer for This Century Art Gallery, which Linda called “the best-kept secret in the area.”
