NEWPORT NEWS — Powered by six conference championships and eight more runner-up finishes in 2024-25, the Christopher Newport Department of Athletics secured the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Trophy from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the eighth time in 10 years as members of the league.
Additionally, the Captains earned both the men’s and women’s Commissioner’s Awards to capture a sweep of the All-Sports Awards from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the sixth time in the last seven years.
Christopher Newport earned team championships in volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s indoor track and field, softball, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis. CNU tied UC Santa Cruz for the most conference championships in 2024-25 and have now won 90 league championship trophies in ten years to rank third all-time behind only charter member Mary Washington (222 in 35 seasons) and Salisbury (191 in 32 seasons), who has been a member since 1993.
The Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award is presented annually to the conference member accumulating the highest percentage toward the award during the academic year. Commissioner’s Award points are awarded based on each team’s finish in C2C Championships. The championship of each sport receives points equal to the number of teams that participate in the sport and the actual number of points accrued is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports.
In 24-25, the Captains finished with a total of 81.3% of possible Commissioner’s Award points with 61, edging out UC Santa Cruz with 48 for a percentage of 77.4%. Salisbury finished third with 49 points (65.3%), Mary Washington had 39 points (53.4%), Mount Mary added 6 points (27.3%), and Warren Wilson finished with 9 points (18.0%).
In addition to the aforementioned conference crowns, the Captains also earned runner-up finishes in eight more sports: men’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, and women’s lacrosse.
Powered by five conference championships, the women’s side had a particularly impressive year and earned the Women’s Commissioner Award with an 86.7% share of the possible points in conference sports. On the men’s side, CNU narrowly edged the Banana Slugs by just 1.1 percent to earn the sweep with a 73.3% final share of the possible points.
The 2024-25 All-Sports trophy marks the eighth overall and fourth straight for Christopher Newport. The Women’s Commisioner’s Award has also been won eight times by the Captains while CNU secured the Men’s Commissioner’s Award for the sixth time.
The C2C All-Sports Award was named in December 2007 to honor the 15 years of service by former CAC Commissioner Richard C. Cook.
