WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary Athletics Director Brian Mann announced Tim Pemberton ’05 has been promoted to Director of Golf on Wednesday. He will also retain his role as head coach of men’s golf.
“As a former student-athlete, and now as the head men’s golf coach, Tim has a great understanding of William & Mary and the athletics department,” Mann said. “He showed tremendous leadership as the Interim Director of Golf over these last several months, and I look forward to his continued impact on our student-athletes. Tim has also built a terrific culture within the golf programs and engages with alumni as well as anyone in our department. His strategic guidance will be a benefit to our new head women’s golf coach Jonathan Howard.”
Pemberton has spent the last five seasons as the head men’s golf coach and served as the interim director of golf this past spring.
“I’m appreciative of the opportunity, and I’m excited to work alongside Mike Leach and our new women’s head coach, Jonathan Howard, to help our men’s and women’s golf programs perform at their best and succeed on and off the course,” Pemberton said.
Last season, the Tribe men’s program posted five top-five finishes. On the women’s side, Pemberton helped W&M to a 17-shot improved at the 2025 CAA Championships.
Under Pemberton’s guidance, his teams produced four of the top 10 season scoring averages in school history, including the two best. In 2022-23, W&M averaged a school-record 292.24. The Tribe finished fourth at the CAA Championships in 2021 and 2023, its best finishes since 2015. The 2023 CAA Championship team score was the second-best championship score in school history.
Pemberton’s teams also fired the top two 54-hole scores in school history. In 2022, W&M shot a school-record 21-under 843 at the VCU Shootout.
Individually, Pemberton’s players posted four of the top 10 career scoring averages in school history. He also recruited and mentored student-athletes to four of the top eight freshman scoring averages in program lore.
In the classroom, Pemberton’s teams have achieved a perfect 1,000 academic progress rate (APR) each year and posted one of the top GPAs in the athletics department. Each of his teams received an NCAA Public Recognition Award, ranking among top 10% nationally in APR for men’s golf, and the GCAA President’s Special Recognition award, the GCAA’s highest academic honor.
Along with Pemberton serving in an interim capacity, Mike Leach ’00 was the interim head women’s golf coach during the spring season. Leach has been the assistant coach for the men’s program the last four seasons.
“I am grateful to Mike for stepping into the head coaching role with our women’s program during the spring,” Mann said. “Like Tim, Mike has a unique understanding of William & Mary having competed at the top of his sport as an All-American, earning his degree, and serving as a coach. His leadership has been of tremendous value to our student-athletes and to the culture of our programs.”
