
WILLIAMSBURG — Senior Gabe Dorsey erupted for a career-high 30 points in leading William & Mary to a 94-83 win over Hampton at Kaplan Arena on Thursday evening.
Dorsey knocked down 7-of-10 from 3-point range, and in the process of scoring his career-high 30 points, he eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career. His 30 points were the most for a Tribe player since 2021, and the Tribe’s 94 points were its most in a CAA game since 2018.
Hampton (10-10, 3-5 CAA) cut an 18-point halftime Tribe lead to as little as one, 66-65, with 9:56 left. Senior guard Matteus Case knocked down a big 3-pointer to answer the Pirates as part of six-straight W&M points to extend the margin back to seven.
The Tribe (12-8, 6-1 CAA) lead was six, 77-71, with 6:27 left when Dorsey knocked down his seventh triple of the game off a Noah Collier steal of a Pirate inbound pass. Dorsey then found graduate student Keller Boothby for a lay-up at the 5:31 mark to push the lead back to double-digits at 82-71.
Hampton drew within six, 87-81, with 1:18 left on a pair of free throws, but W&M responded with seven-straight points to pull out the victory. Collier start the spurt with a fast-break dunk, before the Tribe hit 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final minute, including a trio from Dorsey, to secure the win.
Collier finished with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and six rebounds, while Boothby and Case added 12 points apiece. Boothby and Dorsey led the Tribe with seven rebounds each, while Case dished out a career-high six assists and three steals.
The Tribe shot 50% (27-of-54) for the game, including 11-of-27 (40.7%) from 3-point range. W&M connected on 29-of-35 (82.9%) at the free throw line and outrebounded Hampton, 38-29. The Tribe dished out 19 assists on a 27 made field goals, including five from freshmanx.
Hampton scored the game’s first four points, all from George Beale Jr., and led 13-6 at the 13:10 mark following a Eunique Rink offensive putback that resulted in a 3-point play.
W&M took its first lead, 16-15, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Gabe and Caleb Dorsey with 10:21 left in the opening half.
For a 10:31 stretch in the first half, W&M hit 12 of 14 shots, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range.
Leading by one, 22-21, at the 8:37 mark, the Tribe held Hampton without a field goal for six minutes to increase its lead to double digits. W&M used a 21-5 run to stretch its lead.
Mbeng found classmate Ryan Jackson Jr. with a no-look pass for a fast-break lay-up to push the lead to 30-21 at the 6:16 mark. Gabe Dorsey knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers, before a pair of Kyle Frazier free throws extended the margin to 43-26 with 3:04 remaining.
The Tribe led by 18, 49-31, the half after Collier followed up his own miss with a thunderous dunk with 12 seconds remaining.
The visiting Pirates score the first 10 points of the second half, all come the combination of Noah Farrakhan (5) and Beale Jr. (5). Farrakhan’s right wing 3-pointer off an offensive rebound cut the deficit to 49-41 just 2:28 into the final frame.
A Richard Good’s 3-point play at the 14:19 mark narrowed the margin to 55-51.
Gabe Dorsey answered with eight-straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and a Case free throw at the 12-minute mark gave W&M a 64-55 advantage.
Hampton used a 10-2 run, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Tyler Rice and Wayne Bristol Jr., to close within one, 66-65 midway through the half.
Beale Jr. led Hampton with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Xzavier Long added 14 points and nine rebounds. Trevor Smith scored 11 points off the bench, while Goods tallied a game-high 10 rebounds. Hampton shot 55.2% from the field in the second half and finished at 46.6% overall (27-of-58).
