NEWPORT NEWS — Following an eight-day break for the holidays, the Christopher Newport University men’s basketball team hosts the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center. The action begins on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as Ferrum College takes on Berry College, followed hy the 18th-ranked Captains vs. Misericordia University at 4:00 p.m. The action will continue on Monday with the third-place game at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Championship at 5:00 p.m.
Sunday will be Newport News Public Schools Day at the Freeman Center, as the Captains welcome students, faculty, and administrators from local schools.
John Krikorian‘s squad last saw action in Charlotte, N.C., in the Jay Bilas Classic. CNU fell to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the opener on December 19th, and then bounced back to beat Elmhurst on December 20th in the second game of the tourney. Sophomores Ethan Ward and Tyson Henderson led the way with career highs in the triumph over Elmhurst, 82-80. Ward logged his first career double-double with career highs in points (20) and rebounds (11). Henderson tallied 18 points as the Captains improved to 10-3 on the season. Another CNU sophomore, Toa Hollenbeck, scored 21 points in the opening half, but suffered a back injury late in the half and was unable to continue after coming back briefly in the second half. Junior Collin Hines added eight points, and registered a game-high ten rebounds as the Captains out-rebounded the Blue Jays, 49-39.
The game Sunday with Misericordia, located in Dallas, Pa., will be the first ever of the programs. The Cougars are 6-2 entering the Shootout, and have won their last two games. Ferrum College, a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, is 9-1 and the Panthers have won two straight since dropping their first game of the year at Virginia Wesleyan, 65-45, on December 11th. Berry College, located in Mount Berry, Ga., is 6-5 and won its last game over Earlham College on December 21st, 81-68.
Tickets for the Shootout will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office prior to the games. Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com. The pre-game show will begin at 3:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
